Haiti: How to be a Good Samaritan

In the next several months, our church members are going to be bombarded with requests for money for Haiti. Unfortunately, not all of the charities use their money very well. I asked Monte Sahlin to say a little bit about helping Haiti. LGS

Haiti is the poorest nation in the American hemisphere. This is the largest earthquake disaster in this hempishere in more than a century. The Catholic archbishop of Haiti was killed in the earthquake and the president of Haiti is sleeping in his limousine because the Haitian White House was destroyed. If you ever felt like doing something for "the least of these," now is the time!

But, how can you get money there most effectively and quickly? I had many, many emails, phone calls and text messages yesterday and overnight asking me about this.

The answer is simple, but you may not like it.

The large, established international relief agencies will do the best job both in terms of speed, low-overhead and effective on-the-ground operations. I served for a number of years as the chairman of the inter-agency umbrella group VOAD [Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster] and for two years on the board of FEMA. I know the protocols and have personal friends among the key players.

You will hear lots of small organizations and individuals talking down the large organizations and urging you to give to hundreds of groups that all suddenly appear after a major disaster. Don't be fooled. They're playing to the prejudice that many Americans have against large bureaucracies. But (big but) in times like these the small groups will actually spend a much higher percentage of the funds on transportation to Haiti, shipping costs, etc., while they tell you they have "no overhead." They will be slower to get there because the jam-up at the airport is controlled by governments, the military and the UN. Governments and the UN know the big players and their capabilities, so first priority will be given to those.

Is ADRA one of the big players or a little fish? It is one of the 15 largest agencies on the globe. It has excellent credentials. It has a better rating from independent evaluators than does World Vision, for example. ADRA had an office and team in Haiti before the earthquake hit and they began to respond to the need within minutes. ADRA has backup supplies around the Caribbean and "back door" routes into Haiti. ADRA has a very large global network that is mobilizing supplies and money from throughout the developed nations.

There is no better place to give your money than ADRA. It will leverage your dollar with five to ten matching dollars. It will get supplies there as quickly as the fastest responders. Most important, not only will it play a key role in the immediate response, it will stay around for months and years after CNN has forgotten Haiti and continue with the rebuild effort.
Adventists, I believe, have a special duty to give to ADRA and not other organizations, because others will not support it as readily as we do. We are "it" for ADRA.

There are evaluation agencies out there with excellent information (such as Charity Navigator). Check those web sites before you give. Give intelligently. A lot of money is wasted in every disaster response, largely because of people making bad choices without adequate information.

If you have church members with a sudden urge to go to Haiti, calm them down. Unless they are part of one of the established response organizations and have been through the necessary training, they will simply get in the way and waste precious water, food, lodging and medical supplies. Encourage them to use their time and energy to raise money to support the guys on the front lines.

OhioHealth, Mt. Carmel Parent Among Top Hospital Systems

Ohio dominates a Thomson Reuters ranking of the nation's top 10 health systems, a list that includes the Columbus area's largest hospital network and the parent of Mount Carmel Health System.

The rankings, released Monday, features five Ohio-based health systems, one of which is the eight-hospital OhioHealth Corp. of Columbus, the biggest in the region. Others from the state to make the top 10 were Cincinnati's Catholic Healthcare Partners, Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati, Kettering Health Network in Dayton and University Hospitals Health System of Cleveland. Novi, Mich.-based Trinity Health, the owner of the four-hospital Mount Carmel system, also made the cut.

Thomson Reuters said researchers of its analysis ranking looked at 252 health systems, or all U.S. health systems with two or more short-term, general, non-federal hospitals. The health systems were judged on public mortality rates, medical complications, patient safety and length-of-stay data along with how well clinical standards lined up to those set up by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Most of the information came from the 2006 and 2007 Medicare Provider Analysis and Review.

Thomson Reuters noted the 50 best-performing hospitals had on average 25 percent lower mortality, 19 percent fewer complications and 13 percent fewer patient safety incidents than the 50 worst performers. The top hospitals run the gamut of size, geography, religious affiliation and for-profit or nonprofit designation.

"This suggests that every type of health system has the potential to drive higher quality – and health systems could become a powerful force for rapid improvement in hospital performance as the industry is restructured," Jean Chenoweth, Thomson Reuters' senior vice president for performance improvement and top 100 hospitals programs, said in a release.

The other hospital systems to make the national cut were:

• Advocate Health Care, Oak Brook, Ill.

• HealthEast Care System, St. Paul, Minn.

• Henry Ford Health System, Detroit

• Prime Healthcare Services Inc., Victorville, Calif.

A few weeks ago Carmen and I attended the 50th wedding anniversary party for Carlos and Amy Dennis. Some of you might not know them, because they are faithful at the early church service. They are a wonderful family, who have a farm near Delaware. You could see how much they are loved locally, by the hundreds of their neighbors who showed up! Here's a picture of Carlos showing off his biceps! Amy is in the light-colored tee shirt, across from Carlos and looking at the camera. She's an expert organist who sometimes substitutes for Mrs. Sowards at church services.

The is a report from the project we supplied tables and chairs to last year in Kenya. Our own Kennedy Dulo visited there last week.

Weekly Construction Report- July 26^th- 31st 2009.

The week started very well but ended on a wrong footing. The good news is that we managed to complete laying of the rebars on the remainder of the first floor slab and embarked on fitting the side wood scaffolding. The side wood scaffolding work is almost complete. We also started sealing the small openings between the brick wall and the timber with waste papers and small pieces of timber.

Besides the above work, we also started mixing sand and ballast in readiness for pouring the concrete. This entailed putting materials in the right ratios and hauling it to the mixing rooms (classrooms) with good floors to avoid soiling the concrete mix. We will continue hauling the materials to the mixing rooms and electrical piping next week.

We were also privileged of hosting Kennedy Dulo of Worthington SDA Church based in OH, USA. He met and talked with the pupils and teachers of Pathfinder Academy, visited the construction project, dinning/kitchen, school facilities including the demonstration and teaching garden. We are very happy for his technical advice to the staff and pupils. God bless him. It was nice to have him with us even though it was a short visit. It was not possible for him to attend the Sabbath with us because of the other commitment in Eldoret.

The driver of the Ministry of Public Works who was delivering material to Pathfinder Academy was gunned down. Thank God, he is a life but fight for his life in the hospital.

I met Vicky Talley Cooper at the Health Food Cupboard a few weeks back, and she told us a funny story.

When she was a child, Vicky's parents were missionaries in Africa. They'd stock up on massive case quantities of vegetarian foods when they were home for furlough. But having no place to put them, they stacked them up and put Vicky's bed on top of them. She told us her bed would start out very high, and case by case it would get lower until it was setting on the floor again!

Dear Brother/Sister:

It is urgent to get the following announcement out tomorrow morning in your church/churches:

At least 2,500 families in Mingo County have been forced out of their homes in the last few days by floods. Adventist volunteers in West Virginia are already involved in helping these families with emergency needs. Because there are so few Adventists in that state, they have appealed to us--their neighbor conference across the river--to help them. Please don't send your donation to the Red Cross; we need it to meet specific needs through our registered charity, Adventist Community Services. Put your donation in an offering envelope and mark it for "Ohio ACS-WV Flood."

It is too late to put this in the bulletin, of course. But you could use PowerPoint or simply read it or have someone read it. It might be a good idea to put a print-out on the bulletin board for those who are interested.

Please get it it into next week's bulletin.

If your church is interested in doing a community project that will gain a lot of visibility, you could announce a collection of cleaning materials, baby diapers and other emergency supplies. The families will have to scrub down every surface touched by the flood waters, so they need cleaning products, brushes, brooms, buckets, etc. The Adventist volunteers on location are already giving away the small supply of these things they have. They are looking to us to replace those supplies as soon as possible. We can help you announce this through the radio stations, newspapers, etc., in your area. Let me know if you want assistance from a public relations professional.

“The CDC now believes that the disease currently being caused by this novel flu virus is similar to that typically caused by seasonal influenza. The CDC policy that was issued yesterday no longer recommends that communities with a laboratory-confirmed case of influenza A H1N1 consider adopting school dismissal or childcare closure measures. CDC modified its policy to recommend implementation of measures that focus on keeping all student, faculty, and staff with symptoms of influenza out of schools or childcare facilities during the period of illness and recuperation, when they are potentially infectious to others.”

Ohio Churches May be Asked to Respond to Swine Flu Epidemic

Under the agreements that the denomination has with FEMA and the Red Cross (including our Ohio Conference agreement with the Governor's emergency management staff here in Ohio), we may be asked to have every local church mobilize volunteers and help out if the swine flu epidemic gets to disaster proportions as it has in Mexico City. This morning the first death in the U.S. was registered from this disease and we already have one verified case in Ohio.

Please asked your people to pray that this does not get out of control, but now is the time to do some planning and make preparations in case we need to mount a response operation. Attached is a check-list for Faith-based organizations. Please look it over and share it with your key leaders.

Also attached is a set of handouts from the Red Cross, the Federal government and public health authorities. These are items that you could copy and distribute at church as well as give to the general public. They include information that is designed to prevent a major outbreak of Swine Flu in America as well as prevent deaths if the disease spreads rapidly.

Roy Nelson, our conference ACS Disaster Response Coordinator, has also supplied us with a copy of the current official Situation Report from the Ohio Emergency Management Agency. He is in daily contact with them and he or Trish Tickle, our ACS public information officer, will be supplying you with additional information if there are significant changes in the situation.

This is a key opportunity to share the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ with our neighbors and minister to their needs. If you need ideas or additional information, or have questions, please let me know.

English is a hard language!

9) When shot at, the dove dove into the bushes.

12) There was a row among the oarsmen about how to row .

13) They were too close to the door to close it.

14) The buck does funny things when the does are present.

20) How can I intimate this to my most intimate friend?

Let's face it - English is a crazy language.. There is no egg in eggplant, nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't in vented in England or French fries in France . Sweetmeats are candies while sweetbreads, which aren't sweet, are meat. We take English for granted. But if we explore its paradoxes, we find that quicksand can work slowly, boxing rings are square and a guinea pig is neither from Guinea nor is it a pig.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If the plural of tooth is teeth, why isn't the plural of booth, beeth? One goose, 2 geese. So one moose, 2 meese? One index, 2 indices? Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend? If you have a bunch of odds and ends and get rid of all but one of them, what do you call it?

If teachers taught, why don't preachers praught? If a vegetarian eats vegetables, what does a humanitarian eat? Sometimes I think all the English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. In what language do people recite at a play and play at a recital? Ship by truck and send cargo by ship? Have noses that run and feet that smell?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy are opposites? You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which, an alarm goes off by going on.

English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race, which, of course, is not a race at all. That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible.

PS. - Why doesn't 'Buick' rhyme with 'quick'

You lovers of the English language might enjoy this ..

There is a two-letter word that perhaps has more meanings than any other two-letter word, and that is 'UP..'

It's easy to understand UP, meaning toward the sky or at the top of the list. But when we awaken in the morning, why do we wake UP ? At a meeting, why does a topic come UP ? Why do we speak UP and why are the officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP a report ?

We call UP our friends. And we use it to brighten UP a room, polish UP the silver, we warm UP the leftovers and clean UP the kitchen. We lock UP the house and some guys fix UP the old car . At other times the little word has real special meaning. People stir UP trouble, line UP for tickets, work UP an appetite, and think UP excuses. To be dressed is one thing, but to be dressed UP is special.

And this UP is confusing: A drain must be opened UP because it is stopped UP .. We open UP a store in the morning but we close it UP at night.

We seem to be pretty mixed UP about UP ! To be knowledgeable about the proper uses of UP , look the word UP in the dictionary. In a desk-sized dictionary, it takes UP almost 1/4th of the page and can add UP to about thirty definitions. If you are UP to it, you might try.

The Passing of a Dear Friend

Our friend and long-time church member Myrna Duncan passed away on March 17.

Funeral services will be at the Worthington Adventist church, 11:00 AM Tuesday morning, March 24.

Visitation is at Schoedinger's Funeral Home in Worthington, 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM on Monday, March 23.

Instead of flowers, the family would appreciate gifts to the Worthington Adventist Academy building fund.

Deaths in the church family
